Huntersville Preventative Dental Care

Kids Exams & Cleanings

As a pediatric dentist in Huntersville, Dr. John believes that a strong foundation in preventative care is essential to your child’s bright and healthy smile. The best way to build this foundation is with biannual exams and cleanings, as recommended by Dr. John and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. These appointments start with your child’s teeth being fully cleaned to remove any plaque or tartar build-up that may have accumulated since their last appointment. Our team will identify which areas your child is brushing well and where there is room for improvement. Giving your child the tools and teaching them how to keep their smile confident and healthy is essential to what we do.

After your child’s teeth have been cleaned, Dr. John will complete their exam and answer any questions you or your child may have. These exams are an important way to monitor your child’s growth and development, as well as make sure they do not have any cavities. These exams also provide an opportunity for Dr. John to go over with your child where they can improve their oral hygiene habits.

At the completion of your child’s dental appointment, we will typically place a fluoride varnish on their teeth. This varnish helps to strengthen any areas where the enamel has started to break down (“demineralize”). The great news with this new treatment is that your child can eat and drink right away! No need to wait 30 minutes as we did as children.

Digital X-Rays

At Harbor Pediatric Dentistry, we offer Digital Radiographs (or X-Rays) as part of our commitment to providing your child with the safest and most comprehensive treatment possible. These radiographs are an essential diagnostic tool because they provide us with information that cannot be seen during a typical visual oral exam. X-rays provide insight into the presence of contact (“flossing”) cavities and help us to evaluate growth and development, bone health, abnormal pathology, traumas, and other conditions that may otherwise go undetected. Because we care about your child’s overall health and well-being, we believe that reducing the amount of radiation exposure is extremely important. So, while there is a small amount of radiation exposure in our digital dental x-rays, it is up to 80% less than typical x-rays.

Sealants are a protective coating that can be placed on the biting surfaces of your child’s teeth to reduce the chance of cavities. Sometimes, brushing well isn’t enough to prevent cavities in the deep grooves and crevices of the back molars. Sealants add an additional layer of protection to help combat this, by filling in the deep pits and fissures of your child’s back teeth. This prevents the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in these areas, which are what can cause cavities.  Studies have shown that the pit and fissure type cavities account for approximately 80-90% of all cavities in the permanent molars, and the application of sealants significantly reduces the risk of cavities in those susceptible areas.
